Why ADA Compliance Matters for Your Small Business Website

When you think about your small business website, what comes to mind first? Probably things like design, product photos, or whether your content is up-to-date. But there’s another crucial factor that often gets overlooked: accessibility.

For millions of people living with disabilities in the U.S., a website that isn’t accessible can be a major barrier to doing something as simple as booking an appointment, making a purchase, or learning more about your services. That’s where the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) comes in.

We spoke to Mark D’Altorio, Manager of Rehabilitation Services/Job Placement at Alphapointe, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering people with vision loss through employment opportunities, job training, and rehabilitation services. He shared: “Since its inception in 1960, the Americans with Disabilities Act has ensured that individuals with disabilities are afforded the same opportunities to succeed in the employment sector and other aspects of daily living as others within our society.” Alphapointe is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people with vision loss by providing employment opportunities, job training, and rehabilitation services. Alphapointe is partnering with Start Small Think Big to inform on the impact of ADA compliance and why it matters for your business.

Why Website Accessibility is Good for Business

Making your website accessible isn’t just about checking a legal box. It’s about expanding your reach and serving your community and customers better.

When your website is accessible, whether that’s through readable text, easy navigation, alt text for images, or compatibility with screen readers, you open your doors wider for everyone. Accessibility also supports individuals with situational or environmental impairments. For example, anchor text or alternative text can display important website information to users with limited internet connectivity. Additionally, visual readability can aid those consuming your content in brightly lit environments. That means more customers can engage with your business without barriers.

Accessible websites also improve search engine performance, boost customer trust, and reduce your risk of costly legal challenges. In short, accessibility helps you grow, protect, and strengthen your business.

D’Altorio also had to say, “For organizations, maintaining ADA compliance is so beneficial to all involved. This is true, not only to individuals within the disabilities community, but also to companies and their effort to maintain their moral compass as well as discover unearthed and talented employees who can be valuable to the goals of an organization and fulfillment of their mission statements.”

That’s where we at Start Small come in: We’re partnering with disability advocates like Alphapointe and subject matter experts to help you understand the ADA requirements and how to apply them.

On October 9, 2025, at 3 pm ET, Start Small Think Big, Alphapointe, Columbia Law School, and NYC Mayor’s Office for People With Disabilities (MOPD) are partnering to host a free webinar: Ensuring ADA Compliance & Accessibility for Small Business Websites.
