Strengthening Harlem's small business community with the Harlem Business Alliance
The Harlem Business Alliance has been building entrepreneurial opportunity in Harlem since 1990. Here's what our partnership has made possible, and how to support their work.
At Start Small Think Big, we believe in the power of partnerships and working together with community-forward organizations to break down barriers and provide small business owners with the tools they need to thrive. That's why we're grateful for our ongoing collaboration with the Harlem Business Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating entrepreneurial opportunities for local residents.
Since 1990, they have dedicated themselves to enriching the local small business community in Harlem and New York City, with an emphasis on Black-owned businesses, through education, support, and advocacy. They create pathways for financial and generational success through business workshops, mentorship, events, funding assistance, and strategic networking opportunities.
Turning obstacles into opportunities
The Harlem Business Alliance has seen firsthand how education and strategic planning can transform businesses for the better. A defining trait they see within business owners, specifically Black business owners, is resilience. They shared with us:
"Despite systemic challenges, small business owners continue to innovate, create, and push forward. Our role is to ensure they have the tools and support to succeed."
They have also launched "Young Bosses of Harlem," a program designed to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs. This initiative provides New Yorkers age 16–24 with business branding and marketing tools, one-on-one mentorship, and access to the Alliance's podcast studio. Participants also have a chance to win $200 through a pitch competition.
Our work together
The Harlem Business Alliance and Start Small Think Big share a common goal: bridging gaps in access and ensuring that small businesses get the support they need to thrive. We've worked together to build opportunities, connecting entrepreneurs with the resources and networks they deserve. A favorite moment we share is the work we did together on the Shopify Speed Networking Event. They told us:
